Pft marriage. That was Carmon’s outlook on anything that had to do with that since Shawn died. Once she lost him she never thought there would be someone that could get her heart racing like that again. There wouldn’t be someone that just by looking at her would make her short of breath. But then she met two people that could. Two people that just had the ability to make her act like a fool when she spoke to them but made her feel brilliant with their smiles. Two people that couldn’t stand each other just happened to be the two that she loved the most. Funny that the only two guys that she had any feelings for since Shawn were on the same tour twice in separate bands and always doing something to piss the other off. How both Kendrick and Nugent managed to make her heart flutter was beyond her. Well not too much though.
Kendrick was the realization that someone like him, someone so sweet and so amazing could actually find a little mouse like Carmon to be anything more then an annoyance. That and he was always there when she needed him. But he never really made a move on her other then little pecks here and there. IT was like they were just really good friends. Never anything more. But then she came back on tour and once she wasn’t available to him he wanted her for real. Too bad she was married. Well to bad for him.
Nugent, on the other hand, came completely from left field. Carmon always told herself that she should never get involved with someone from her own band because it will only end badly. She will only end up getting hurt and that would make it harder for her to work with the guy. Plus she had to live in very close quarters with him for the tours. She noticed pretty early into those tours that he would always check to see if she was in her bunk when he came to his. It was like he had to know if she was there for him to be ok. Funny she found herself doing the same thing but was better at playing it off like it was nothing. But this one, the one that could be so cold to her, that could hurt her so bad but still show he loved her more then anything ended up marrying her. Funny she actually got married and to someone in no way like Shawn.
But it was love. She knew it was love. The way she felt when he was close to her. The way she always wished he was there with her. That was love. It was how she felt before and now she had a chance at keeping it forever. Forever was never going to happen. Carmon realized that as time went on. After they were married things changed. Everything went down hill and she couldn’t stop it. The domino effect had begun with the I do and it would end when someone decided they really didn’t. Now the race was on to see who would crack first. The one in pain or the one causing it. But that role tended to switch off as of late.
He was being distant again. Carmon noted to herself. Like he was earlier but there was no sign that he was high. He wouldn’t be not right now it would be stupid. “Why wouldn’t I be around Cal? Like I said I live here and I said I’d be back later I just got back earlier then I thought.” She didn’t like that he wasn’t touching her. It made that stupid paranoia flare up. When ever he was like that she didn’t know how to act. Should she stop touching him? Or keep doing it to show that she didn’t mind? He didn’t do anything he just acted like she was everyone else. Like she wasn’t his wife. Her heart hurt at the thought that he was acting like he didn’t love her. But she didn’t know what was going on with him anymore. She’d come back she would have thought he’d be warm to her but instead he was cold and distant.
Finally he made a move to show that he still knew it was her. Cal pulled Carmon closer which brought her to snuggle closer to him and take the hand in her lap in both of hers. “Good.” She smiled up at her husband and touched his cheek again. These were the moments she missed when they were actually alone together. When it was like there was only the two of them in the whole world and nothing could destroy them. Not his drugs, not jealousy, or interruptions. Nothing, it was just the two of them.
But he didn’t say I love you back. He didn’t say it back to her. Why wouldn’t he do that? Why would he act like she didn’t say it? IT was back again. That tightening feeling in her chest when she knew something bad was going to happen. They were going to fight again. Something was going to be said and they’d argue like they always did. It wasn’t fair she was happy again. She was happy in his arms and it was going to be torn apart like it always was. It wasn’t fair that this had to happen. Why couldn’t she just be happy and stay happy for once? That was all she wanted to be happy. For both of them to be happy. But that wasn’t possible anymore. “Why does me saying I love you mean we have to talk? You just say it back.” Her voice was low and she wouldn’t look at him as she spoke. This was crushing her. The way he said it told her something was coming. Something that would ruin them.
“I think maybe it’s best we get a divorce.”
Carmon froze at the words. She couldn’t breath. This wasn’t happening it couldn’t be happening he couldn’t say that to her he didn’t. She’d imagined it. “Let go of me.” Practically throwing herself away from Cal she was at the door in a matter of seconds holding on as tight as she could to the frame with her back to him. Calm down Carmon calm down. Her mind kept telling her. This wasn’t really happening. He would never say that to her. He wouldn’t do that to her! He said he wouldn’t. He promised to love her and he was breaking her heart like it was nothing. Like it was another stupid vial of drugs. Her love meant nothing to him. She wasn’t important anymore. She was blocking his using. She was the reason he wasn’t happy. That was why this was happening. If she hadn’t nagged him he wouldn’t do this.
“You- you-.” She couldn’t say it. It wouldn’t come out. If she said anything to him she was going to start crying. It was all over she was going to break down in front of him again. Slowly she turned to look at him. “Get away from me. Get out.” She moved away from the door and held on tight to herself as she looked at him. This was happening. They were going to be over and it was because of her. If she hadn’t left before, or if she’d left when he first told her to. If she hadn’t made him push her this wouldn’t have happened. “I gave everything to you and- and you’re just going to leave me like it never happened? Like I’m nothing?” She was crying. Those stupid tears that she never wanted to shed.
Long live the car crash hearts.
